It is a common everyday thing to do when one leaves home to embark on a journey to look back before one leaves for good. It is a mental thing to look back and take that final memory with one. It was Lot’s wife, who was told not to look back and when she did, she was famously turned into a pillar of salt. It was not always so dangerous or indeed necessary, but in her case, they were being saved from the destruction of the town of Sodom and they were not supposed to see the destruction of the evil that they had left, as God destroyed all the negativity and depravity that existed there.
Looking back when leaving home may be to wave goodbye to ones family before going off to war and the likelihood of returning was small. It is a hard thing to do. One leaves the memories and comforts of ones youth behind and goes off to an uncertain fate with many others. It is a strange feeling to go and be uncertain of returning. Many did return after being captured and enduring years in a prisoner of war camp. When they did come home, they were changed men. Many were unable to talk about their experiences.
During the potato famine in Ireland from 1845 to 1852 whole families left to seek a new life in England or America, because there wasn’t enough food for them to stay at home. So, they left never to return. They had to go to a new land to find work and start a new life away from all they knew and had grown up with. Looking around the world there are many communities that grew up and survived being moved from home for whatever reason to start a new life. It all began by the taking of that first step to leave and perhaps took that final look back, so that they had a final memory to take with them.
A journey into the unknown often makes us want to look one more time. Many have passed away from this life and have been afforded a look back as they left their earthly body. From the safety of their spirit body, they may see their family around the bed mourning the departure. One young man went to his death in a motor car accident and was told that if he wanted to, he could look back and see the accident occur. He later appeared to his father and was able to tell him how he was collected by another from the Spirit World and was swiftly escorted there from his earthly death. There are many incidents of the dearly departed appearing to prove that they are still alive and well. God loves us and doesn’t want us to grieve for our loved ones as we will all meet up again when it’s our time to look back one last time.
